Pops Sunset Grill - A Restaurant Review

Along the water, on the West Coast of Florida, across from beautiful Casey Key and just north of Venice is the craziest place called Pop's Sunset Grill.   Don't let the word Sunset in the name fool you, this is not your upscale restaurant.  In fact I think it prides itself on what I like to call negative ambience.

If you are a carpenter this place would be your worst nightmare.  Created from multiple small buildings and decks, absolutely NOTHING in this restaurant is level.  But its great!   Most of the seating is outside and you can arrive by boat with a limited number of slips.  The atmosphere is casual and fun.

The frozen drinks are great, though I often prefer an Iced Tea or an Arnold Palmer to a frozen drink.  But its the sandwiches that keep me coming back again and again.

The absolute BEST thing on the menu is the Crab Cake Club.   I consider myself a Crab Cake conoseur and this just might be the best I have ever had.   My grandfather, who also loves the dish, concurred with my opinion and I have had numerous friends and family members confirm it.  The club comes with bacon on a roll with a side of aioli sauce.  But you can also get the Crab Cakes in a fry basket.  But thats not the only delicious thing on the menu.   The fried grouper sandwich was one of the best meals with grouper I have ever tasted and I am told the Grouper Reuben was just as delicious.  I have also tried the chicken sandwich, which I also enjoyed.

The food is great, but be warned, its basket food.  If you have an issue eating out of a basket and a plastic cup (although its a "green" cup) then Pop's is not the place for you.  But if you enjoy a fun atmosphere and casual but good food, then head over to Pop's Sunset Grill.   And if you have a boat, tie up there and have a great day.

Oh and while your there, say hi to Pop for us (above).   But watch your food, he will steal it.
